A few interesting facts about the town of Walhalla...
'Walhalla' is derived from 'Valhalla', also known as the 'hall of the slain' in Nordic mythology.
The current population of Walhalla is made up of around 20 permanent residents.
It was originally founded as a gold-mining community in early 1863.
Several major public buildings including the Mechanics Institute and Star Hotel were destroyed in two fire events in 1944 and 1951 and a number of buildings were destroyed without being rebuilt.
In December 1998, Walhalla became the last mainland community in Australia to be connected to the electricity grid.
Ghostly figures and disembodied footsteps have been reported at the Long Tunnel Mine.
